5 of the best Mornington Peninsula wineries I can’t help raving about – Kendall Hill

Polperro, Red Hill

Polperro, like Ocean Eight, has a stunning setting. Its terrace restaurant and tasting room crown a steep hill framed by soaring angophoras, with vines trailing down to a dam. This is the X-factor about peninsula touring – you come for the wines but stay for the scenery and the serenity.

Winemaker Sam Coverdale leads me through tastings of his Even Keel and Polperro ranges while black cockatoos keen from the treetops. Among the offerings are an elegant 2019 Talland Hill chardonnay with hints of fennel and baked chestnuts (his words this time, not mine), a citrusy tempranillo rosé, and a couple of fragrant, fruit-filled pinots noir.

Working in the Roussillon region on France’s Mediterranean coast early in his career reinforced what winemaking and wine are all about. “It’s about the vineyard,” Coverdale says. “But it’s also about life. And food.” – Kendall Hill
