2024 Coverdale Pinot Noir
REGION
Mornington Peninsula
TASTING
The 2024 Coverdale Pinot Noir leads with dark fruits, cherry, plum and quince jam, along with freshly turned soil. The palate is brambly, forest floor, spiced quince, blue and black fruits, plum berry compote and puckery savoury tannins. A fine acid line creates elegant length.
WINEMAKING
The fruit is handpicked and destemmed into 2 ton open fermenters as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally. It is not touched until a 2-3° drop in baumé, which allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berry to increase the aromatics of the finished wine. Once fermentation starts strongly then the ferment is hand plunged 2-3 times per day for 15 days. The wine is left on skins for post ferment maturation for another 15 days. It is then pressed off skins and racked to barrel. 30 % new oak and predominately Sirugue extra tight grain Light toast. In spring the wine is racked and returned to barrel. After a total of 16 months barrel maturation the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.
VINEYARD
The Coverdale vineyard, winemaker and owner Sam Coverdale’s family vineyard, is situated on a northerly slope with vineyard rows orientated to the north east. It is a very sheltered site sitting in a little valley looking north out towards the Dandenong Ranges. With protection from strong winds to the south, east, west and north there is even ripening throughout and as a result it is the first of the single vineyards to pick each year with lovely mid-palate fruit weight and structured tannins.
