2025 Even Keel Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir

REGION

Mornington Peninsula

TASTING

An initially brooding nose unfurls into fragrant quince, plum and red apple skin, laced with earthy spice and lifted florals. The palate shows energy and drive, framed by dusty fine-grain and velvety tannins. Ferrous and graphite notes add complexity, with the fruit profile turning brighter and more vibrant than the nose. It carries with beautiful structure, seamless flow and length.

WINEMAKING

+

The fruit is handpicked from multiple vineyards and blocks, with the majority destemmed as whole berries into 2 and 5 tonne open fermenters. The exception is the whole bunch Clone 667 from Mill Hill and the Talland New Block MV6. Fermentation begins naturally, with the fruit left untouched until a 2–3° drop in baumé. This allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berry, enhancing the aromatics of the finished wine. Once fermentation is underway, the must is hand plunged two to three times daily over 15 days. The wine then remains on skins for post-ferment maturation for up to a further 15 days before being pressed and racked to barrel. Seasoned oak is used throughout maturation. The wine is racked and returned to barrel during summer, before being bottled unfined and unfiltered in the autumn of the following year, after a total of 10 months in oak.

VINEYARD

+

Even Keel Mornington Pinot Noir is produced from Pinot Noir from five our own managed vineyards on the Mornington Peninsula. The majority Pinot Noir at 75% (clones D2, D5, MV6, B1, G clone) comes from Hunts Road in Tuerong, 130 metres above sea level. It’s in sandier, well-drained soils and is very open and exposed to all the winds. Even though it’s lower lying and to the north of the Peninsula it’s actually a very cold site and is one of the Peninsula’s largest, at 66 acres. The remaining fruit comes from Talland Hill New Block (a total of 10%, made up of clones 777 and Abel), and single vineyard sites Little Laney (a total of 8%, clones 115 and MV6), Mill Hill (4%, clone 667) and Coverdale (a total of 2%, made up of clones 777 and 115).

VITICULTURE

+

We purchase our fruit from the vineyards, in partnership with growers, however, we do use our own fruit from young vines. We grow, make and farm our vineyards using a philosophy of sustainability and regenerative agriculture, applying a mix of biological, bio-dynamic and organic practices.
