Coverdale Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2021

Mornington Peninsula

Brooding darker berry fruits with autumnal leaves, florals and spice. Powerful mid palate of red to dark fruits and dusty structured tannins. Great intensity and length and an exciting first release of this wine.

The fruit is handpicked and destemmed into 2 ton open fermenters as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally. It is not touched until a 2-3° drop in baumé, which allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berry to increase the aromatics of the finished wine. Once fermentation starts strongly then the ferment is hand plunged 2-3 times per day for 15 days. The wine is left on skins for post ferment maturation for another 15 days. It is then pressed off skins and racked to barrel. 30 % new oak and predominately Sirugue extra tight grain Light toast. In spring the wine is racked and returned to barrel. After a total of 16 months barrel maturation the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

The Coverdale vineyard is situated on a northerly slope with vineyard rows orientated to the north east. It is a very sheltered site sitting in a little valley looking north out towards the Dandenong Ranges. With protection from strong winds to the south, east, west and north there is a very even ripening thru out and as a result is our first of single vineyards to pick each year.

Planted in 2010 on 101-14 rootstocks the vineyard consists of the following Pinot Noir Clones of MV6, 115, Pommard, 667 and Abel. The single vineyard wine made from this vineyard is made exclusively from 1 acre of MV6 clone.  All vines are cane pruned to vsp

We grow, make and farm our vineyards using a philosophy of sustainability and regenerative agriculture, applying a mix of biological, biodynamic and organic practices.

“Deep red-purple, impressively intense and youthful in colour. The bouquet is reserved and subtle with savoury underbrush and dried-herbiage aromas, plenty of suggestions of whole-bunch, joining with concentrated dark-cherry fruit which really drives this wine. Powerful, dense, rich and supple in texture, the tannins lavish but ripely smooth, the whole thing lasting a long time on the finish. A top-flight pinot that deserves a bit of time in the cellar”. 97/100, Huon Hooke – The Real Review

“The first vineyard picked across the single vineyard portfolio. North-facing and warm. Riveting aromas of bush plum, Chinese lacquer, red cherry and clove. A warm and intense mid-palate, straddling medium- to fuller-bodied in the context of pinot. A bit bolshy. A bristle of oak holds court at the back end, corralling the fruit while compressing it into a subtle tension. The inaugural release of this site. Good it is, too. Drink or hold”. – 94 Points, Ned Goodwin.
