Landaviddy Lane Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

REGION

Mornington Peninsula

TASTING

Bright and pretty, with a nose of red strawberry jelly crystals, florals, clove spice, chicory and lavender. The wet earth forest floor of the site comes through in a beguiling tangle of petrichor and bramble that balances those sweet red fruits. The acidity and soft-but-chalky tannins result in a wine that is eminently drinkable and flavoursome.

WINEMAKING

+

The fruit is handpicked and destemmed into a 2 ton open fermenter as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally.  It is not touched until a 2-3 drop in baumé, which allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berry and I believe increases the aromatics of the finished wine. Once fermentation starts strongly, the ferment is hand-plunged 2-3 times per day for 15 days. The  wine is left on skins for post ferment maturation for another 15 days.  It is then pressed off skins and racked to barrel. 30 % new oak and predominately François Freres and Sirugue extra tight grain Light toast. In the spring the wine is racked and returned to barrel. Finally after a total of 16 months barrel maturation, the wine is bottled without fining or filtration.

VINEYARD

+

Our Landaviddy Lane vineyard is located in the sub-region of Shoreham and is situated on a gentle southwest facing slope with the vine rows running in a north, northeast direction.

This sheltered valley sees very little morning sun and plenty of afternoon sun; moderated by the cooling Bass Strait sea breeze allowing for gradual ripening. The wine is sweet-fruited and perfumed with round and flowing tannins.

REVIEW

+

The 2022 Landaviddy Lane Pinot Noir leads with a sweetly fruited red strawberry nose, with sandalwood, freshly grated nutmeg, violets, kicked dirt, pomegranate, red apple skins, a hint of clove and star anise, dried herbs and a whiff of tapenade. The palate follows exactly. This is a wonderful wine. it’s consistent in texture, persistent in flavor and beautifully balanced. The tannins have a pliable softness to them; they’re dry and powdery yet firm and chalky. It’s so exciting to taste this. It comes highly recommended. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax. – 96/100, Erin Larkin – Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Medium-full red with a purple tint, the bouquet is complex, meaty, smoky/charcuterie, with hints of balsamic herbs in balance, raising the question of some whole-bunch but if so, it’s subtly handled. A trace of chocolate, too. The palate delivers fruit sweetness and succulence, ripe and neatly balanced by fine, gentle and supple tannins. This is a pinot noir that is loaded with charm and deliciousness. – 96/100, Huon Hooke – The Real Review
