2023 Talland Hill Chardonnay
REGION
Mornington Peninsula
TASTING
Aromatic nose of fleshy white stone fruit, lemon and white florals with some subtle nutty nuance. The palate is elegant and generous with a honeyed subtlety balanced by fresh driving acidity showing citrus/stone fruit. Lovely textural mouth feel to finish.
WINEMAKING
Certified Organic and Biodynamic – the fruit is handpicked in two picks across front block and villa block, the fruit is then whole bunch pressed on the same day using a gentle champagne press cycle. No enzymes or sulphur are used at the press tray and the juice is oxidatively handled to get rid of oxidative enzymes early on in the winemaking process. The wine is left at ambient and transferred to barrel with full solids and minimal sulfur is added.
Fermentation occurs using wild yeast and is then left unsulfured to the following summer at which time most of the wine has completed full malo-lactic fermentation. A minimal amount of sulfur is added in the spring and left in barrel for a total of 12 months where it is racked off gross lees and into tank. The resulting wine is bottled using no finings and minimal filtration.
VINEYARD
Our Talland Hill vineyard is located in Red Hill at the home of our Cellar Door and Restaurant. The site is north facing with vine rows running in similar orientation with the exception of the front block Chardonnay with its vine rows orientated to the north-west.
It is a warm and sheltered site and is the second of our single vineyard wines to pick each year. These vines produce bold Pinot Noirs, with powerful fruit and strong tannin structure. Chardonnay from this site is intense and mineral and tends to be a little less expressive early on in comparison to the Mill Hill vineyard.

REVIEW
“Medium straw-yellow colour; almond-meal, apricot-kernel and grapefruit-pith aromas, the palate delicate but piercing with lively acidity and restrained lemon/citrus flavours. Slightly nutty oak overtones. The wine is soft and round on the tongue, with fine acidity and a trace of marzipan. Good length. Individual and appealing”. 95 / 100, Huon Hooke – The Real Review.
“Certified organic and biodynamic, the north-facing Talland Hill vineyard is a warm and sheltered site in Red Hill that produces intense and mineral Chardonnays. This is fermented with wild yeast and matured in barrel for 12 months before bottling with no fining and minimal filtration. Savoury-led aromas of cheese cloth, citrus preserves, and baked nectarine with gentle pastry dough beneath. The palate is deep set and round, though still tensile, with preserved lemon, ripe grapefruit, unripe apple and oyster shell minerality framed within lemon peel-laced acidity”. Tom Kline, Decanter Magazine.
