Talland Hill Single Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

REGION

Mornington Peninsula

TASTING

Crunchy with sweet red fruits, this is a compact and complex wine. A nose of cracked spice—white pepper, clove and cardamom—meets bold red fruit and powerful tannins. An energised and powerful wine.

WINEMAKING

+

Certified Organic and Biodynamic – the fruit is handpicked and destemmed into a 2 ton open fermenter as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally. It is not touched until a 2-3 drop in baumé , which allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berries , increasing the aromatics of the wine. Once fermentation starts strongly,  the ferment is hand-plunged 2-3 times per day for 10 days or until sugar is dry.

The wine is left on skins for post ferment maturation for another 10 days. It is then pressed off skins and racked to barrel.

30 % new oak and predominately Sirugue Troncais extra tight grain Medium toast and D’aquitaine Allier and Jupier tight grain medium toast oak barrels. In spring the wine is racked and returned to barrel. After a total of 16 months barrel maturation the wine is bottled without fining or filtration and minimal sulfur.

VINEYARD

+

Our Talland Hill vineyard is located in Red Hill at the home of our Cellar Door and Restaurant. The site is north facing with vine rows running in similar orientation with the exception of the front block Chardonnay with its vine rows orientated to the north-west.

It is a warm and sheltered site and is the second of our single vineyard wines to pick each year. These vines produce bold Pinot Noirs, with powerful fruit and strong tannin structure. Chardonnay from this site is intense and mineral and tends to be a little less expressive early on in comparison to the Mill Hill vineyard.

REVIEW

+

The 2022 Talland Hill Pinot Noir is aromatically quite muscular and robust, with pomegranate pearls, sandalwood, red apples, autumn leaves and a hint of mahogany cupboard. The wine is concentrated and mineral, with graphite, cold tea, dried strawberries, hints of dried rosemary and cracked pink peppercorns. The palate is supple and savory in a great way. This is a superb wine. If I leave it a while and smell it again, the aromas are a little metallic somehow, but as soon as I swirl the glass, it releases all the red fruit and becomes beguiling once more. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under Diam and wax. – 94/100, Erin Larkin – Robert Parker Wine Advocate
