2024 Even Keel Tasmania Pinot Noir

REGION

Tasmania

TASTING

Perfumed, with notes of graphite, spices, red and dark berries and poached plum. There is density and complexity. Focused bright red berries, there is a depth and dimension of spice. Fine tannic structure with great persistence thanks to its refreshing acidity. This is a wine of elegance and balance.

WINEMAKING

+
The fruit is handpicked across multiple vineyards and blocks and destemmed into 2 & 5 ton open fermenters as whole berries and left to start fermenting naturally. It is not touched until a 2-3° drop in baumé, which allows fermentation to occur inside the grape berry and increases the aromatics of the finished wine. Once fermentation starts strongly, the ferment is hand plunged 2-3 times per day for 15 days. The wine is left on skins for post ferment maturation for up to 15 days, then pressed off skins and racked to barrel. Seasoned oak is used, then it is racked and returned to barrel in the summer. The wine is bottled without fining or filtration in the autumn of the following year, giving it a total of 10 months in oak.

VINEYARD

+

Evandale situated in the White Hills about 15 minutes south of Launceston, 166 metres above sea level. It’s more Continental there, not as influenced by the Tamar, so therefore you have cooler nights and warmer days. Less disease pressure as a lot of the rainfall drops on the mountain range behind. A 50 acre site, north-facing vineyard with granite based soils, planted predominantly to Pinot Noir along with Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Gris.

VITICULTURE

+

Sam works with trusted grower partners across the region, maintaining contact throughout the growing season. At harvest, the fruit is carefully hand-picked and then vinified and matured at the winery on the Mornington Peninsula.
