2023 Even Keel Tumbarumba Chardonnay

REGION

Tumbarumba, New South Wales

TASTING

A sniff of minerals, early-picked nectarines, stone fruit and florals sitting atop a faint background of barrel-ferment characters. Again that minerality on the palate. Textural with lots of fresh citrus and stone fruits compact in the mid-palate opening up to a persistent lengthy finish.

WINEMAKING

+

The fruit is handpicked and whole bunched pressed using a gentle champagne press cycle. No enzymes or sulphur are used at the press tray and the juice is oxidatively handled to get rid of oxidative enzymes early on in the winemaking process. The wine is left at ambient or if needed chilled to 15 degrees and transferred to old French oak barrel with full solids and minimal sulphur added. The wine is allowed to ferment using wild yeast and no additional sulphur added until the following summer when in most cases the wine completes full malolactic fermentation. After 10 months, the wine is racked off gross lees and transferred to tank. The resulting wine is bottled using no finings and minimal filtration and minimal sulphur.

VINEYARD

+

Courabyra Vineyard located in Tumbarumba Canberra,  is on western facing slopes, with an altitude of 730 metres, decomposed granite soils and abundant rainfall. Large diurnal fluctuations in temperature make it ideal for growing world class chardonnay. The vineyard was established in 1993 of the 8.1 hectares only 3.5 hectares were planted to Chardonnay in 1996.

VITICULTURE

+

We purchase our fruit from the vineyards, in partnership with growers, however we do use our own fruit from young vines. We grow, make and farm our vineyards using a philosophy of sustainability and regenerative agriculture, applying a mix of biological, bio-dynamic and organic practices.

REVIEW

+

The nose is refined and mineral-driven, with notes of orange blossoms, preserved lemons and flint. The palate is very tightly wound, with a medium-bodied mouthfeel and piercing acidity, giving notes of grapefruit pith, shortbread and lemon balm. From two vineyards sitting at 500 meters and 700 meters. Drink or hold. Screw cap”.93/100, Ryan Montgomery – James Suckling

“Sourced from Tumbarumba in NSW, this charismatic Chardonnay speaks of the cool vibes and chilled swagger of its maker Sam Coverdale. Lemon juice and white fleshed stonefruit reign supreme with a lemon sherbet tang knocking everything into place. Some almonds, cashews, a fine vanilla oak detail and a harmonious ginger spice build length and interest with a subtle ribbon of minerality. It’s not a showy wine nor is it seriously complex yet it carries itself with great pride. In all, it’s a fabulous wine to share and it calls for weekend chills and then some. Great stuff.” – 92/100, Steve Leszczynski  – Q Wines
